Knowing home remedies for various ailments (in this case, a toothache) is good prepper knowledge.
In the unfortunate event in which you develop a toothache and are unable to get immediate dental care (post SHTF?), consider any of the following 10 home remedies for that sore tooth…
In alphabetical order,
ALCOHOL
Alcohol kills bacteria and helps numbs the pain when absorbed by your gums. So use straight up vodka, whiskey, brandy or any stiff alcoholic drink and rinse your mouth with it.
BAKING SODA
Dissolve one tablespoon of baking soda into 1/2 cup of water with a pinch of salt. Swish it around the painful area. Note that baking soda contains a high level of sodium.
BLACK TEA BAG
Use black tea bags. Tea is full of tannic acid (an astringent) and relieves pain and helps healing. Put a soaked tea bag on the tooth. Keep a bit of pressure on it as long as possible.
CLOVE
Cloves may be the most effective method to soothe a toothache. It contains a great amount of the anesthetic (pain numbing), anti-septic (bacteria killing) natural chemical called eugenol. Take one or a few whole cloves and suck or chew on them in your mouth near the aching tooth. You can also use clove powder and keep it in your mouth around the sore tooth (or put some in an empty tea bag and keep it against the tooth).
GARLIC
Garlic contains allicin which is a very powerful natural antibiotic, which starts to fight the cause of an infected tooth immediately. Chew on cloves of raw garlic. Or you can make a garlic mouthwash by smashing 6 or 8 cloves and mixing with 1/2 cup of water to swish around your mouth.
ONION
Chewing on a raw onion for a few minutes will kill all the harmful germs in the mouth.
PEPPER
Mix 1/4 teaspoon of table salt with a pinch of pepper and put it straight on the tooth, which will give you instant relief.
SALT WATER
This is one of the simplest toothache remedies… Take a glass of water and solve some salt in it (as much as you can stand) swish this around in you mouth. This will give you about a 30 minute breather from the pain.
VANILLA
Put 3 to 4 drops (1/2 teaspoon) of vanilla extract directly on the painful tooth or take a bit more and swish it around in your mouth.
VINEGAR
Soak cotton in vinegar and put it on the affected tooth and bite down a bit. This will temporarily relieve the pain. Or, add two teaspoons of baking soda to two tablespoons of vinegar apply it directly to the aching tooth or swish around around the area for about two minutes. Rinse your mouth to get rid of the taste and the pain will be gone.
