Do You Have What it Takes? How to Survive the Apocalypse

At any moment, some disaster could occur that completely changes your life. Whether it be some chain-reaction natural disaster, war breaking out on American soil, or the disintegration of our government, only those of you who are well prepared for any eventuality will have the chance to survive. Those who possess these qualities may just become the leaders that emerge in an apocalypse.

Self-Defense

The time may come when there is no more 911 to call in an emergency. If you have firearms, be sure you know how to properly use them. Have every member of your family take a basic self-defense class as well.

Stay Hydrated

Water is one of the most important things you will need in any kind of emergency. While it is great to stockpile bottled water, it is also necessary to scope out a source of fresh water you can go to if needed. If animals are drinking from the water source, then it should be safe for your family. It is a good idea to boil the water before you drink it, just to be on the safe side.

Eat Well

When you are no longer able to stop by the local grocery store for dinner on your way home from work, you will need to know how to supply food for yourself. Learn to grow and can your own vegetables, hunt and prepare your own meat and fish. Even very young children can be taught to fish. You also need to get a good book that can teach you what items growing in nature are safe to eat. A survivor knows how to get food in any situation.

Stay Warm and Dry

If your house becomes uninhabitable, then you may be forced to go on an extended camping trip. Have some good quality tents on hand, and bring good sleeping bags, a complete mess kit, matches, flashlights, extra clothing and shoes. Be sure you also have a well-stocked first aid kit for every member of your family. Take your family camping now to see how well you can manage in an emergency situation.

Important Documents

The world has a way of renewing itself, and the survivors of any disaster are bound to come together and rebuild at some point. It may be a good idea to keep a fireproof safe, or gun safe with you to hold your important documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, bank information, medical records and money. Have a professional come and fit your safe with compartments and waterproofing elements to keep your documents well hidden and safe.

Don’t wait for disaster to strike to figure out what you need to do. Use the above tips to prepare yourself, and you can protect your family and count yourself among those lucky enough to survive whatever is thrown at you.
